Protests against Uma Oya

A protest was held in Bandarawela to repair a leak in a tunnel of the Uma Oya multipurpose development project. More than 30,000 individuals comprising of religious leaders, local government members, closed shops, markets and other premises joined to force the government to repair the leak in the tunnel and to provide compensation for the damage caused for the people due to the development work carried out in the project.  The project was launched in 2009 to provide irrigation and drinking purposes for Hadapangala and Lunugamwehera reservoirs. The total costs of the project are 530 million US$. According to reports 80 million litres of water each day released due to the water leak in the tunnel.  More than 4000 houses observed with cracks in their walls after the project started.

Statement issued by UNIC Colombo on Newly appointed UN Youth Envoy

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has appointed Jayathma Wickramanayake of Sri Lanka as his next Envoy on Youth. She will succeed Ahmad Alhendawi of Jordan to whom the Secretary-General is grateful for his dedicated service in addressing the needs and rights of young people, bringing the work of the United Nations closer to them. The success of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development depends on empowering young people as rights-holders, agents of change and torchbearers.

Dengue fever patients exceeds 69,000

According to the Epidemiology Unit of Ministry of Health, so far this year 69380 suspected dengue cases have been reported from all over the island compared to the 23,814 case reported for the same period in the previous year, Causing 200 deaths for this year. Health Ministry further states that percentage of school children with dengue fever has increased by 20%.

Countries set to agree on decisive and actions to restore marine world to health as Ocean Conference

The 193 Member States of the United Nations are set to unanimously agree to a set of measures that will begin the reversal of the decline of the ocean’s health as the five-day Ocean Conference concludes this afternoon. The outcome document, together with more than 1,300 commitments to action, marks a breakthrough in the global approach to the management and conservation of the ocean.
